My original intention was to introduce solids to D when he was 6 months old. However he began showing signs of interest in food long before that. He was always staring at us when we ate our meals and it got to the point where he won't sit on his rocker during our meal times and would only calm down if one of us took him and put him on our knee. It didn't stop there. He would try to grab the plate or any food of it. It was terribly funny and he had the habit of making me feel extremely guilty by staring pitifully whenever I cleaned my plate up! Yet still I held out thinking that it was best to keep him longer solely on milk. I was keen to try out Baby Led Weaning on him seeing his interest in wanting to pick up food off my plate, but the criteria for BLW was that the baby had to be able to sit up and D wasn't quite there yet.
We were at baby massage class one Friday morning and during the coffee break, D started getting upset with the mums when he saw them eating their toasts and drinking coffee. He put up such a grumble that the class coordinator took him in her arms and turned him to face the wall so that he couldn't see all the eating and drinking going on around him. The situation was quite hilairious. However that evening during our meal time he tried to 'steal' food off my plate! It was then that I told P that it was probably time to start D on solids and that we would do it the next day. D was only 24 weeks old! A bit earlier than I intended to but guess he couldn't wait.
When D was 3 months his health visitor gave me a booklet on weaning. I looked up the internet for ideas and found a few great websites: homemade baby food recipes and wholesomebabyfood which gave useful tips for starting and first food recipes etc. However I think my greatest resource in this food adventure is the Big Book of Recipes for Babies, Toddlers and Children. I decided not to give D any commercial jar foods namely because I love cooking but also I hope to pass on to D a love for his heritage through the food we eat. Needless to say I'm hoping to introduce our spicy Singaporean food to him one day ... soon! :)
